Cornflower 'Black Ball' Seeds
Dark, dramatic, and impossibly sophisticated—'Black Ball' is the moody, mysterious member of the cornflower family. Despite its name, the colour isn't truly black but rather a deep, sumptuous shade of velvet maroon-chocolate that looks like it has been dipped in dark plum ink. It's the colour of crushed blackberries, of vintage velvet, of old Dutch oil paintings.
This variety transforms a standard cottage border into something modern and elegant. It creates a stunning display when planted with white cosmos or Ammi for a "black and white" look, and adds wonderful depth to hot borders of reds and oranges. Standing tall on silvery stems, 'Black Ball' is a fantastic cut flower—absolutely stunning when tumbled into a vase with other informal blooms. Like all cornflowers, it's incredibly easy to grow, tough as old boots, and produces buckets of flowers all summer long.

Understanding the Plant
Centaurea cyanus 'Black Ball' is a robust Hardy Annual (H7). As a selected form of the British native wildflower, it is perfectly adapted to the UK climate, surviving temperatures as low as -20°C. It is a "cool-season" specialist, meaning it establishes its best root systems when the soil is cool in either spring or autumn.
The "Autumn Secret": While many gardeners sow Cornflowers in spring, the secret to giant plants with hundreds of flowers is September sowing. Autumn-sown 'Black Ball' plants develop massive, resilient root systems over winter and burst into bloom weeks earlier than spring-sown counterparts, resulting in bushier, taller, and more floriferous specimens.
Mythology & Medicine: The genus name Centaurea originates from the centaur Chiron in Greek mythology, who was said to have used the plant’s healing properties to treat wounds. This heritage reflects the cornflower's centuries-old presence in European botany and its deep roots in the British countryside.
Growing Guide
Cornflowers are among the easiest plants to raise from seed, providing high reward for minimal effort.
How to Sow:
Direct sow outdoors in September for early summer blooms, or in March to May for a continuous mid-to-late summer display. Cornflowers possess a deep taproot and hate being moved; for this reason, direct sowing into their final position is always the most successful method. Scatter the seeds onto finely raked soil and cover very lightly (just 3mm deep). Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days.
Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and prefer well-drained soil. Paradoxically, Cornflowers perform better in poor, "hungry" soils. Over-feeding or planting in rich ground will lead to excessive, soft leafy growth and weak stems. Sandy or chalky soils are ideal for producing sturdy, upright plants.
Ongoing Care:
As 'Black Ball' can reach heights of 90cm, we recommend providing light twiggy support (hazel or birch) early in the season to prevent the plants from flopping after heavy rain. Deadheading spent flower heads weekly—or cutting them for the vase—is essential to stimulate the plant into producing fresh buds until the frosts.

Beautiful Garden Combinations
Dark flowers like 'Black Ball' act as a stunning visual anchor, providing a dramatic counterpoint to available seeds from our range:
- ☁️ Ammi majus: The Monochrome Duo. The lacy, frothy white umbels of Ammi majus (Bishop's Flower) provide a luminous backdrop that allows the deep maroon-chocolate of 'Black Ball' to truly stand out. This is a quintessential florist's pairing for sophisticated, professional-looking bouquets.
- Calendula 'Touch of Red': The Hot Border Pair. The burnished orange petals with mahogany-red undersides of this Calendula mirror the dark tones of the Cornflower perfectly. Together, they create a rich, glowing tapestry that provides high-quality nectar for bees until the first frosts.
Sowing & Flowering Calendar
Direct sow in autumn for the strongest plants, or in spring for successional waves of maroon blooms through the summer.
Wildlife Champion
Cornflowers are a superstar plant for biodiversity. As an RHS Plant for Pollinators, 'Black Ball' produces high-quality, easily accessible nectar that attracts a vast array of British bees, butterflies, and hoverflies.
Robust Garden Stamina
Known for its stamina and ability to thrive on poor, sandy, or chalky soils, Centaurea cyanus 'Black Ball' is an essential choice for those wanting to create a moody, low-maintenance garden that provides high-quality dark stems for the vase.
